A little research tells me that black oil is common in air cooled airplane engines.
They say it is due to ring blow by until the engine is up to temp.

Maybe the GM guys know their mfg tolerances...

I always thought the reason for 2 batteries was to give longer cranking time in cold weather.
If you are not having starting problems with one battery I would just keep doing what you are doing.

With out PICs I would think about maybe putting them up on "sticks" like you see on some boat trailers.
That might get them up and out of your way when working and yet be seen when rolling.
