Like Walker said, ABS is just an "add-on" (sort of) and if it malfunctions because of a speed sensor, it fail-safes to "off". The components should be bled on a regular basis just like the rest of the braking system but that is rarely done due to special tools/scanners needed (usually).

The main problem I've seen with ABS over the years are fluid leaks due to corrosion, etc.
