FWIW, I know of several welded buildings around the countryside on the western prairies of Canada that are still standing and serviceable today, as good as the day they were put up.
One of them was built in the early 70's and I actually got to watch it being built. It used 4.5" round pipe and was a carport in its first life. It's now a fully enclosed garage/shop and still standing proud.
That was the building that first lit the spark for my interest in welding.
