Default Mag Drill Base

Got a start on the mag drill base today. Made from 6"x1/4" flat bar. Need the extra height so I can use the chuck adapter I made for standard drills. Broke down and bought new steel for this project. Got 5 sides cut fit up and welded today. Not a big fan of 6013, but need to use up a 50 lb. can somehow. Satisfied with the welds from an old blind guy.

Leaving the last end piece until I decide the design for small parts that are too small for the mag drill, like something less than 12" long. Still not sure how I am going to clamp them to the end of the base. I left the end open so I have access to the inside for welding if necessary.

The base is 6"x6"x10" welded with 6013 at 110 amps. I am also adding tabs on the outside at each corner so I can bolt it to the welding table.

More later when I figure out the clamping design.

How about something like this leaving the front open?

Are you going to use the magnet to hold it in place? I have known them to let go on 1/4 plate, might pay to put another bit inside to make it up to 1/2" and plug weld it in. Embarrasing when they let go ( how do I know that?)

Side view with a cut out to allow for wider stock and with three stand offs to allow for clamping a stability

I like the standoff idea digr. Looked through the resource pile and fond a piece of 12" wide by 1 1/2" leg channel. The 1 1/2" leg lets me get a 3" C clamp in to hold the small parts. I like the thought of making it portable and still allow it to be bolted to the weld table too. I will weld some angle iron clips to the base and use 3/8" bolts to attach to the channel or to the weld table. Let me know what you think of the layout on the pics.

I am adding a 12" plate inside the base so I will have much better mag attraction. Thanks for reminding me. I have to look for a scrap piece today.
