I am kind of lost here, don't you have to raise your mag drill up six inches?
Are you going to notch your box to allow for wider stock?
I don't understand the vee shape you have laid out.
The channel should work fine.

In the pic the dotted lines are the drill The 6" box sits under the drill. I just did not add that to the layout. Now you got me thinking to cut in a notch for wider stock.

The V shape is cut out so I can slide in clamps to what ever the width of the material is.

Glad you're gonna thicken up the "grab" surface, I added 1/2" to the 3/8" web thickness of the 10" channel mine's made of - haven't had a "oopsie" caused by magnet pull-off yet, biggest I've done so far is 1-1/2" hole thru 3/4 plate -

If you figure out how to make the short stroke of a mag drill work with twist drills that vary in length by about 3", I'd love to see it - been mulling that one around off and on for a couple months now. Got a couple ideas, but keep finding reasons I DON'T like 'em ...Steve

I expect I will just not be able to use large size new drills, only older worn down drills.

Yup. Just like that, except with the channel on the bottom.

I would go as much as you can, maybe about half the length of the mag, the more you notch the wider the stock you can drill.
