Glad it is running again.
Well that was not what you asked...

But as to why, I can only guess.
1. The governor gear is plastic and reached it end of life.
2. Something to do with the flyweights failed and shredded the governor.
3. The phase of the moon.
4. The misalignment of the planets.
5. Tim is getting smart.
6. Too many liberals on the planet.
7. Gremlins in the engine.
8. The operator running the injection molding machine was hung over from drinking too much beer and eating too much bratwurst.
9. My ex-wife cast a hex on me.
10. Canada exists.

11. Spawn of Shade was trying to do wheelies out of the ditch and upon landing the front, the excess hard landing caused the plastic gear to implode.

FUCK ME!!!!

So I go out to the shop at lunch time to spent a little quality time with the
engine throttle controls and the engine manual. I have 30 minute for lunch
so I don't expect much to get done other than communing with the engine...

Oh no that is not the fucking plan, says the large puddle of oil under the
tractor... So I grabbed both boys and we start tearing down the engine so
we can pull it my first though was the lower (vertical shaft engine) crank
shaft seal was bad... I order a seal for the top of the engine, lucky they are
the same seal. Nope the seal is dry and in one piece the leak is some where
else...

So to make a long story short... The counter balance is an oscillating weight
that moves on eccentric bearing surfaces on the crank shaft. See the first
picture. Well clearly some of the errant gov. parts decided to dance the
tango with the weight and crankcase... see the last two pictures...

I guess it is fortuitous that I retrieved my TIG welder from my buddy's house
to weld some stainless parts... Now I get to weld some aluminum too...

Did I forget to mention...

FUCK ME!!!!

I wondered when this started if it was not going to end up engine replaced . Maybe your luck has changed.

Shade Jr. is at Farm and Fleet for new belts and a new battery.

I will head out to the shop shortly and see if any oil leaked out over night,
I filled last night....

Install the belts and deck tonight and adjust the throttle controls. All should
be good.
