It is important that the bends in the plate be parallel. To help ensuring this, I will add a series of notches with a .125" radius along two opposing edges of the plate. These notches will be spaced 2" apart.

The notches will index with a detent locator on each end of the tool. Below is a picture of the detent locator with the 1/4" detent pin removed. The compression spring can be seen inside the counterbore.

This will make a beast of a roller compactor.

Nice work getting it up and running.

But much less fun!

For me "Easy" is a concept that is often overrun by "What if".

Besides, I will have a unique convertible roller, I have not seen a tow behind with removable pads.

This is the first of eight plates that I am adding notches to. I took advantage of the T slot that Bridgeport provides on the front vertical surface of their tables by securing two locators to it. I am plunge cutting with a 1/4" end mill. One edge has been done.

The tool being used in the press. Did I mention that it was made from scrap pieces? Once I figured out a few quirks I was able to complete one plate in about 15 minutes?

I used the same method to make the curves in 1/4" x 4" FB for my trestle jacks. Worked great for me.

This was my first time bending like this. I could not be happier with the results. I Wonder if this process has a name.

The plates were slightly over bent. I used shims inside the die to limit the amount of travel but I was unable to get the correct thickness. adding a piece of sheet metal.030" thick resulted in an insuficent bend.

I dont think you could hope to get much closer than that, looks great. If you bolt in the middle first before drilling for the edge holes you should pull it in easy

Although...... you're planning on welding lumps/pads onto the plates? which will pull them in the weld. is there a way of figuring the curvature needed starting out to pull the plate back to the finished curve, now that'd be cool
